PICKLE AND OIL FINISHING
Cleaning/de-scaling:
When metal parts undergo heat treat processes such as annealing, hardening, or tempering, they often develop an oxide layer or scale on the surface. This oxide layer can be undesirable as it can affect the appearance and functionality of the part. The pickle and oil process can be used to remove this oxide layer and protect the parts from rusting during storage and transportation.
Rust Removal:
Parts that have light surface rust may be salvaged after the pickle and oil process. The acid in the pickle solution dissolves rust and loosens its bond with the surface. Parts are rinsed, then coated in oil to prevent further rust formation and corrosion. RTF uses a buffered acid pickling solution that is not aggressive, allowing for removal of light surface rust. Parts with heavy rust may require an additional or separate process of vibratory de-rust or shot blast.
